The Scoop on Columbus
In Columbus Ohio there is a trendy ice cream shop that is all the rage. Unlike some similar places in New York City, Jeni’s Ice Cream offers a large variety of off-the-beaten-path flavors, but still things you want to eat. Jeni’s is responsible about their ingredients; milk, cream, and berries are raised sustainably from Ohio’s countryside.
Aunt Susie took us to the shop in Grandview, Ohio to give the place a try. She had been there before and had the Berry Lavender flavor. The young man behind the counter was great! He helped us pick the right flavor but also shared his favorites with us, too.
We tried: Bourbon Butter Pecan, Gravel Road (it has smoky almonds), Thai Chili (a spicy and sweet combo), Strawberry Buttermilk, and for the first time I tasted the Ohio classic combination of salty creamy peanut butter and chocolate in other words “a buckeye” in honor of the Buckeye State.
After all the tasting, we were finally ready to order. Susie had a sweet, rerfreshing scoop of the Pear Riesling sorbet in a cone. Brian went for the salty and slightly bitter (as it should be) Salted Caramel with smoked almonds in a waffle cones. I think mine was the best. I had a scoop of the Meyer Lemon and Blueberries frozen yogurt. It had the high acidity from the Meyer lemons and the tang from the yogurt and a sweet blueberry compote. I was so happy I got a scoop. It is the best summer flavor for me.
Next time I come across flavors like five spices, wasabi, or carrot ginger, I will remember how Jeni’s is able to introduce new flavors to frozen desserts that are different, but still welcoming. This place will definitely keep me coming back for more.
Hmmm…..maybe after dinner!
